Prevention Is the Point

A checkup and cleaning every six months isn't just routine maintenance. It's how small issues get caught before they become expensive ones. At Stouffville Dental Arts, your preventive appointments are thorough, unhurried, and built around what's actually going on in your mouth.

We take the time to explain what we find and what it means, so you leave every visit with a clear picture of where your oral health stands.

We Catch What's Coming

Regular visits give us a detailed, ongoing record of your oral health over time. We're not just looking at what's happening today. We're comparing it to what we saw six months ago. That continuity is how we catch a developing cavity before it needs a root canal, or spot early signs of gum disease before it becomes harder to manage.

You'll Always Know Where You Stand

We don't hand you a treatment plan and send you on your way. We walk you through everything we find: what needs attention now, what we're monitoring, and what looks good. No surprises, no confusion, just a clear and honest conversation about your oral health.

Appointments That Respect Your Time

We run on schedule, communicate clearly, and make sure your time in the chair is productive. When you leave, you'll know exactly what was done, what comes next, and when to come back.

How Often Should You Come In?

For most patients, every six months is the right cadence. That said, some people benefit from more frequent visits based on their individual oral health history. You may need to come in more often if:

  • You're prone to cavities or have a history of gum disease
  • You smoke or use tobacco products
  • You have a health condition that affects your oral health, such as diabetes
  • You're pregnant, as hormonal changes can affect gum tissue
  • It's been a long time since your last visit and we need to get your oral health back on track

We'll tell you what schedule makes sense for you and adjust it as things change.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy Between Visits

What you do at home between appointments matters just as much as the visit itself. Here's what makes the biggest difference:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, spending at least two minutes each time
  • Floss once a day to remove buildup from between teeth where your brush can't reach
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, especially between meals
  • Stay hydrated. Saliva is one of your mouth's natural defences against decay
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn

Meet Your Care Team

Dentistry Where You Feel the Difference

From your first call to every follow-up, you'll notice we do things differently. Our team takes the time to understand what you want from your dental care and builds from there.

Care That Fits You

Your smile goals are specific to you. We ask about them before we talk about treatment, so what we recommend actually makes sense for where you are and where you want to be.

A Team You Grow With

We see patients from six months old through their senior years, and every age in between. The longer you're with us, the less you need us – and that's the point.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your checkup and cleaning covers several things, each with a purpose.

Teeth Cleaning

Your hygienist removes the plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can't get on their own. This includes cleaning along and just below the gumline, polishing the tooth surfaces, and giving you feedback on areas worth paying more attention to at home.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-rays let us see what's happening between teeth and below the gumline. They use a fraction of the radiation of traditional film X-rays, and results appear immediately so we can walk you through them in the chair.

Dental Exam

Your dentist reviews everything: your X-rays, your gum health, your bite, and the condition of every tooth. We check for cavities, signs of wear, and anything else worth monitoring. If we find something, we explain it clearly and talk through your options before anything is recommended.

Oral Cancer Screening

At every checkup, we screen for early signs of oral cancer. This is a quick visual and physical check of the tissues in and around your mouth. Early detection makes a significant difference in outcomes, and it's a routine part of every visit here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance for checkups and cleanings?

Yes. We direct bill all private insurance plans and accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Before your appointment, we'll confirm your coverage and let you know what to expect in terms of out-of-pocket costs.

How long does a checkup and cleaning take?

For most patients, about an hour. If it's your first visit with us, we book 80 minutes to make sure we have time to take records, get to know you, and go through everything thoroughly.

Can a dental checkup detect problems beyond my teeth?

Yes. A thorough exam can reveal signs of gum disease, jaw issues, oral cancer, and conditions related to your overall health. Your mouth gives us a lot of useful information.

My gums bleed when I brush. Is that normal?

Bleeding gums are common but not something to ignore. It's often a sign of gum inflammation, which can be addressed with improved home care and a professional cleaning. We'll assess your gum health at your visit and let you know what we find.

What is oral cancer screening and why does it matter?

Oral cancer screening is a quick check of the tissues in and around your mouth, including your lips, cheeks, tongue, throat, and jaw, for any signs that warrant a closer look. It's included in every checkup here because early detection significantly improves outcomes.

Do I need X-rays at every visit?

Not necessarily. How often you need X-rays depends on your age, oral health history, and what we're monitoring. We follow current guidelines and only take X-rays when they're clinically appropriate.

What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, goes further below the gumline to treat gum disease. We'll let you know if a deep cleaning is recommended and explain why before anything is scheduled.

Is a cleaning painful?

For most patients, a cleaning is comfortable from start to finish. If your gums are sensitive or it's been a while since your last visit, you may feel some pressure or tenderness during the cleaning. Let us know and we'll adjust accordingly.

What happens if I haven't been to the dentist in a few years?

We'll start by taking a full set of X-rays and doing a thorough exam to get a clear picture of where things stand. We won't make you feel bad about the gap. We'll just focus on getting your oral health back on track.

How often do I really need a dental checkup?

For most people, every six months is the right schedule. Some patients benefit from more frequent visits depending on their oral health history. We'll recommend what makes sense for you based on what we see at your first visit.
